Korokoro Catholic Cemetery hui

Over 60 parishioners and friends gathered for a peaceful hui beside the grave of famous chief Wi Tako at the Catholic Cemetery on the corner of Pito-one Street and Korokoro Road on Sunday 1 December 2024. The acre of land was gifted by Chief Ti Puni in 1853 to the Archbishop of Wellington for burial of Catholics in the Hutt Valley / Te Awakairangi.

The kaupapa on the day was to recall and pray for the tipuna interred in this important site and learn about our shared histories. Secondly, we recommited to joint kaitiakitangi of this special place. It is cared for by Wi Tako’s descendants, the Love whānau, the parishioners from Te Wairua Tapu / Holy Spirit parish and the Hutt City Council.

After prayers and blessings those present walked (or drove) to the Te Puni urupā in Te Puni Street and then onto Sacred Heart Church, Britannia Street, to share stories, a kaputī and kai.
